This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

OVERVIEW
1. Spanish literature approaching the twenty-first century.
a) Factors that play a role in literary communication.
b) A time of crisis: Spain within the European intellectual pessimism.
c) The aesthetic triumph: the Vanguards.
d) Societal aspects in literature.
e) The search for new forms and ways.

2. A plural country: the writer and his/her environment:
a) The generation of 98 transforms Castille into a myth.
b) Andalucía: cradle of a generation of poets
c) Madrid and Barcelona: reflection of literary renewal: Juan Marsé, Juan Benet, and Eduardo Mendoza.
d) From rural to urban: Traditional and Modern literature.

3. Literature unique to Spain
a) The influence of a unique time in literature: Twentieth century Spain.
b) Spanish society as a narrative topic.
c) Spanish countryside as reflected in poetry: the generation of '98 and '27.
d) The urban world and its leading role in twentieth century Spanish theatre
e) Women writers: Rosa Montero, Almudena Grandes, and Zoe Valdés.

**Class participation in discussions is expected.
**A mid-term exam will be administered, along with a final exam at the end of the course.
