OBJECTIVES
The course will offer the students a vision of the thought of the antique cultures (Greece, Judaism, Rome and Christianity) in their conditions as basis for Western culture. There will be special emphasis in the commentary of original Greek and Latin texts.
PROGRAM
2.1--Organization of the course
The course will consist of a series of theoretical classes of skills in character, complemented by the commentaries of texts that correspond to the theoretical classes.
2.2--Theoretical Classes
The will consist of the exposition and pertinent explication of the themes contained in the following program:
1. Greece
1.1 Ancient Greece; the origins of the metropolis. Thought, poetry, art.
1.2 Classic Greece (Athens): Classicism in literature and art.
1.3 Philosophical thought: Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.
1.4 Hellenistic civilization: the universal Greek thought and culture.
2. Judaism
2.1 Political-religious history of Israel.
2.2 The Bible as literary and religious work.
2.3 The hellenization of Judaism: Philan of Alexandria and Flavio Josefo.
3. Rome
3.1 Military conquest and hellenization.
3.2 Literature, art and religion.
3.3 Roman history and historians.
4. Christianity
4.1 Birth and expansion of Christianity.
4.2 Greek Christian literature.
4.3 Latin Christian literature.
5. The inheritance of the Ancient World and the basis of Western culture.
