Crossing Cultures

The following activities are often available in Sevilla, offering opportunities for students to participate in and learn about Spanish culture:
There are often"intercambios" (language exchanges) available for students studying during the semester in Sevilla. Students can arrange to spend time with a Spaniard who is interested in learning English, meet them at a social outing and have a conversation, half in Spanish, half in English. Intercambios take place most often at tapas bars around the city. They are a great way to practice your Spanish but also to get to know a local and possibly their friends as well. This creates a great opportunity for you to experience Sevilla to the fullest and from a native perspective.
Bullfighting is Sevilla's signature sport but they also have a great pride for their fútbol teams, Sevilla and Betis. Depending on students' preferences, there are many opportunities to attend bullfights or soccer games during their time abroad. The directors in Sevilla also organize pick-up soccer games, open to all semester and year programs, and students are encouraged to participate in order to experience the love of the game in Spain.
The old neighborhood of Triana is a great place to visit to explore traditional Sevillano culture. Visit the flamenco tablaos to see this famous genre of music and dance that has made Sevilla and Spain in general famous.
Santa Cruz is an area of town with winding streets that hold a great deal of culture and tradition. This is the old Jewish quarter, or the Juderia, which has now been turned into the perfect place for tapas or an evening stroll. Some of the streets are so narrow, cars can not pass down them. Vibrant shades of red and yellow dot the whitewashed walls, while the iron wrought balconies covered with flowers prove that people still live and thrive in this quiet and mysterious neighborhood.
