Advanced
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

This course examines the sound system of Spanish and concentrates on improving pronunciation. Emphasis will be placed on the peculiarities of Andalusian Spanish and classwork will include transcriptions and intonation exercises.

EVALUATION
There will be two partial exams (30%, 15% each) about the material during the semester; additionally, there will be a final exam worth 30% of the grade. All of the exams consist of a theoretical part and a practical part. Active participation in class and turning in homework punctually is very important and will be monitored daily, counting 20% of the final grade. Transcriptions: There will be various phonetic transcriptions during the course of the semester that will count 20% of the final grade.

COURSE MATERIAL:
The students should acquire a notebook of photocopies with the lecture material and phonetic exercises from the university to use during the semester. Additionally, the students should purchase the book "Ejercicios prácticos de pronunciación" and bring it to class.

CLASS SCHEDULE:
1. Introduction: Phonetic and Phonology. The phonetic apparatus.
2. Pertinent characteristics.
(I) Phonemes and allophones. (II). Vowels and consonants (I). Sonorous articulation, the qualities of sounds (II). Practices with EPPE.
3. Vowels and consonants (II). Dipthongs, Tripthongs, and hiatuses. Place and mode of articulation. Picture of Spanish consonants: occlusive consonants (I): bilabials and linguodentals.
4. Oclusive consonants (II): linguovelars and other alophones. Introduction to phonetic translation in Spanish. Practices with EPPE.
5. Consonants fricative: interdentals, alveolars, velars, and palatals. Comparisons with other languages (especially English). Exercises of phonetic transcription.
6. The affricates, nasals and liquid. Semi-vowels and Semi-consonants. EXAM 1.
7. Exercises of articulation: Practices with EPPE. Phonetic translations and recordings.
8. Introduction to the phonetic peculiarities of Andalucian Spanish (I). Exercises in phonetic translation.
9. Andalucian Spanish (II): pre-consonant aspiration of /s/ and its phonetic consequences.
10. Andalucian Spanish (III): loss of final consonants and other phonetic aspects. Pictures of Andalusian Spanish phonemes.
11. Spoken Spanish in Andalucia: practical exercises: Phonetic transcriptions. Syllable and groups. Suprasegmental phonetics. EXAM 2.
12. Practices with EPPE. Introduction to intonation: the tonic group, the tone, accent, and intensity.
13. Exercises of intonation. Translations of intonation. The pragmatic force of intonation. EPPE practices.
14. Turn in all homework and translation. General review of the course. FINAL EXAM (to be determined)
