This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

This course analyzes the beginnings of the short story in Latin America in the 20th century and its subsequent development, revising the different styles and literary movements which take place over time and the extraordinary contribution of women writers to this genre. The complex social, political and cultural reality will be studied as it is reflected in the Latin American short story. The stories of Horacio Quiroga, Modernism, "Criollismo", Magic Realism and the most recent literary tendencies will be examined.

OBJECTIVES
1. Understand Latin America literature and social and political reality through short story.
2. Introduce the most important authors, works, and movements of Latin American Literature.

AGENDA
1. The story in the 19th century: Romanticism, Realism, and "Costumbrismo"
2. The modern story (Rubén Darío, Leopoldo Lugones, Amado Nervo)
3. The story of the land El cuento de la tierra: "el indigenismo." (Horacio Quiroga, Rómulo Gallegos).
4. The social story.
5. The story and the vanguards (Borges).
6. Magical realism (Carpentier, Asturias, García Márquez).
7. The stories of de Juan Carlos Onetti y Juan Rulfo.
8. The short story and the boom of the Latin American novel (Lezama Lima, Cortazar, Cabrera Infante, Vargas Llosa).
9. The last generations (Puig, Bryce Echenique)

EVALUATION
The final exam is 35% of the final grade. The students should complete two papers relating to the lectures or text, each will count for 25% of the final grade. The final 15% will consist of participation, attendance, and attitude in class.
