This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

OBJECTIVES
The aim of this Course is to provide an overall vision of the possibilities of Cinema as a didactic instrument by which knowledge of the Classical World may be transmitted. Classes will be based on the screening of movies which will then become the subject of comment in terms of the historically-based content to be explored.
This Course, therefore, finds itself drawn into the process of the revitalization of this kind of cinematic genre which has taken place in recent years, as confirmed by the number of new titles dealing with Greeks and Romans that have reached the movie screen. In this way, a demonstration is being offered of the educational potential of Cinema, as well as the present-day relevance of this kind of subject-matter.

SYLLABUS
The syllabus is based on the distribution of the screenings which will be the subject of comment during class sessions:

The Origins of Rome.
Unit 6. Espartaco (Spartacus).
Slave Rebellions in the Roman Republic.
Unit 7. Julio César (Julius Caesar).
The End of the Roman Republic.
Unit 8. Cleopatra.
From Republic to Empire.
Unit 9. La vida de Brian (The Life of Brian).
Divine Men within the Roman Empire.
Unit 10. Gladiator.
Life and Death at the Height of Empire.
Unit 11. El rey Arturo (King Arthur).
The End of Antiquity.

ASSESSMENT
Grading and assessment will be based on the handing-in by each student of eleven format assignments. These will involve commentaries on key aspects of the work carried out in class sessions following the screening of each of the movies.
