This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

1. The Spanish-American Novel and its Origins. Reasons for the Genre’s Late Emergence. Its Evolution and Development during the Twentieth Century.
2. Twentieth-Century Narrative: Trends and Models.
3. The Novel of the Mexican Revolution. Mariano Azuela’s Los de abajo.
4. The Novel of the Fantastic. Borges, Bioy Casares.
5. The Existential Novel. Ernest Sábato’s El Túnel.
6. The Boom in Narrative in the Sixties: Trends and Models.
7. Magic Realism and the Figure of Gabriel García Márquez. El coronel no tiene quien le escriba.
8. Documentary Realism. Mario Vargas Llosa’s Los cachorros.

ASSESSMENT

An exam will be held during the final week of the semester.
