This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of five semesters (or seven quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

1. Vanguardist Movements in Spanish America: Manifesto-Type Texts and Critical Texts. Movements, Typification, and Development. Links with the European Avant-Garde.
2. Vicente Huidobro and the Altazor Cycle. Poetry and Poetics.
3. The Poetry of César Vallejo: Trilce (a story of pain and tenderness).
4. The Dark Poetry of Nicolás Guillén. Motivos del son: Cultural Rhythms.
5. Octavio Paz’s Piedra de sol: Freedom of the Word.

Two written exams will be held (each taking into account two of the authors studied) so as to discover the extent of students’ assimilation of the Course’s theoretical core and to calibrate the degree reached of familiarity with poetic language.
