Advanced
This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

OBJECTIVE
To provide the student with the instruments necessary to strengthen what they have learned and continue making progress in their knowledge of Spanish. Special attention will be paid to the oral and written skills, using diverse communicative functions.

ORAL CONTENTS
1. State an opinion. Evaluate and judge the opinion of others.
2. Organize and reinforce an argument.
3. Oppose and contrast ideas.
4. Agree and disagree.
5. Ask for and give information.
6. Make recommendations and ask for advice.
7. Express personal feelings.
8. Protesting and expressing anger.
9. Express doubt and probability.

WRITTEN CONTENTS
1. Rules of accentuation and signs of punctuation. Functional structures for controlling written communication.
2. Biographies.
3. Personal letters. Resources for composing invitations, thank-you letters, congratulations, apologies…
4. Editing. Formulas for writing descriptions, narrations, expositions, and arguments.
5. Letters to businesses and institutions. Conventions of formal letters.

EVALUATION
30% partial exam
40% final exam
30% assignments, class participation, and attitude

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is mandatory.

LEVEL CHANGES
Changes of level may only be made during the first week of the course. Likewise, it will not be possible to drop a course once the second week of class has begun.
