This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

OBJECTIVE
To improve the student’s knowledge and use of the language: to maintain and practice the communicative capacities learned, and to present the most complex morpho-syntactic structures.

PROGRAM
TOPIC 1--SPEAKING ABOUT THE PAST
The uses of the past tense. Temporal markers.

TOPIC 2--PHYSICAL AND PERSONALITY DESCRIPTIONS
The uses of ser and estar. Special adjectives. Colloquial expressions.

TOPIC 3--EXPRESSING HYPOTHESIS AND PROBABILITY
The uses of verbal tenses for the expression of probability.

TOPIC 4--EXPRESSING DESIRES
The uses of the subjunctive with expressions of desire: que, quien, ojalá.

TOPIC 5--SHOWING AGREEMENT AND DISAGREEMENT
Giving advice, expressing tastes, sentiments. The uses of the subjunctive, infinitive, indicative in substantive clauses.

TOPIC 6--DEFINING, DESCRIBING, AND GIVING INSTRUCTIONS
Expressing finality. The uses of the indicative, subjunctive, infinitive in temporal, finals, and relative clauses.

TOPIC 7--IMPERSONAL EXPRESSIONS
The uses of aphonic pronouns.

TOPIC 8--EXPRESSING REAL AND HYPOTHETICAL CONDITIONS
Conditional markers: si, como, simepre que.

TOPIC 9--USES OF POR AND PARA

EVALUATION
30% partial exam
40% final exam
30% assignments, participation, and attitude

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is mandatory.

LEVEL CHANGES
Changes of level may only be made during the first week of the course. Likewise, it will not be possible to drop a course once the second week of class has begun.
