SUBJECT: IMMIGRATION IN SOUTHERN EUROPE AND ITS SOCIAL IMPACT

COURSE OUTLINE: UNIT 1 " HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION
- Immigration throughout history.

UNIT 2 " ANALITICAL VIEW FROM THE ORIGINS
- Geo-political and socio-economical analysis of the countries and regions of departure: Magreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, East Europe and Latin American.

UNIT 3 " ROUTES AND FRONTIERS
- Immigration routes: Straits of Gibraltar, Canary Islands, airports, Eastern European borders.
- At Europe’s borders: mafias and human trafficking.
- Personal experiences (film).

UNIT 4 " WHO ARE THEY? WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? FLOWS AND COMPONENTS
- Three main flows: From the South (Africa and Asia), East (Europe) and West (Latin America).
- National and ethnic mix in the countries of destiny: Southern Europe (Spain, Italy), France, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark and Scandinavian countries.
- Statistical and demographic analysis (how many get in, who are they, family reunification, how many return).

UNIT 5 " LEGAL FRAME
- Legal frame: EU law and national law (Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, UK, Scandinavian countries).

UNIT 6 " MODELS OF RECEPTION
- Social integration models.
- National policies: health, education, housing, job schemes.
- Modes of reception, degrees of integration: economic-social, cultural and political analyses (demoscopic).
- Personal experiences (film)

UNIT 7 " ECONOMIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC IMPACT
- Economic and demographic global impact:
a) In countries of destiny
b) In countries of origin
- Economic-social impact:
a) Cash remittances.

UNIT 8 " THE NEW “WE” IN THE MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY. WHO ARE WE NOW?
- Challenges of the multicultural society: “needed but not liked?”
- Searching for a new common ground: between the law or respecting the culture?
- Diversity of education or educating for diversity?: integration, assimilation or segregation
- The political discourse on immigration: center-right, center-left, radical-xenophobic (extreme rightist parties)

ABSENCES Class attendance is mandatory. Students will be allowed 4 unjustified hours of absence. Tardiness is considered ½ absence.
