This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

Overview

This course analyzes the role of women in Spanish literature in the 19th and 20th centuries as well as the literary works written specifically by women during both centuries. The role of women in literature of previous centuries will be examined. It is mainly during Romantisicm that women begin to take an active role in literature and by the middle of the 20th century women have the liberty to express themselves and their vision of reality through the world of fiction.

OBJECTIVES
•Study the function of the woman in contemporary Spanish literature from the point of view of the reader and the writer.
•Study the historical configuration of the feminine persona in the contemporary Spanish novel.

TOPICS
1. The feminine persona in the realist novella of the 19th century (Fortunata y Jacinta y La Regenta).
2. The literary institution and the woman in the 19th century (Fernán Caballero, Rosalía de Castor, Concepción Arenal, Emilia Pardo Bazán).
3. Women and the Vanguards.
4. The Feminine persona en the 20th century novel (Nada y Conco horas con Mario).
5. The literary institution and the woman in the 20th century.
6. Themes in current literature: Is there a certain feminine image? Do Soledad Puértolas a Lucía Etxebarría.

EVALUATION
The final exam counts for 35% of the final grade. The students should turn in two papers about readings or commentaries throughout the course, whose value will be 25% each. The remaining 15% will be determined by attendance, participation, and attitude in class.
