OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this Course is to provide students with a general overview of the evolution of the Novel genre in Spanish during the second half of the nineteenth century. The setting up and analysis of the realist paradigm.
METHODOLOGY
A theoretical study of Realism as an aesthestic proposal, a review of realist Spanish writers, and above all, a practical approach to the compulsory texts on the syllabus in class sessions, based on reading and commentary.

2) Juan Valera or Free Fiction. Pepita Jiménez. The Realist Novel. Traits and General Characteristics.
3) Benito Pérez Galdós: Narrative Trajectory. Misericordia.
4) Naturalism in the Nineteenth-Century Spanish Novel. Emilia Pardo Bazán.
5) Leopoldo Alas “Clarín”. La Regenta.
6) The Transcendence and Projection of the Realist Novel in Later Literature.

ASSESSMENT
Two written tests will be set, one mid-way through the syllabus content and the other at the close of the semester, wherein students will be expected to confirm their knowledge of the subject matter dealt with during class sessions, as well as their capacity to apply such knowledge to the analysis of the set readings.
Likewise, active participation in class sessions will also count toward positive grading.
