Prior to enrolling in courses at this language level, students must have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish at their home university in the U.S.

Overview

OBJECTIVES
a) To contribute to the improvement of students’ linguistic skills regarding their use of a more cultured form of Spanish by means of their reading and analysis of works of Literature.
b) To broaden students’ awareness of Spanish society and its culture.
c) To become familiar with, to comprehend, and to appreciate literary works by key authors.
d) To reflect, in a considered way, upon Contemporary Spanish Drama and certain of its most representative plays.

METHODOLOGY
a) Theoretically-based lectures.
b) Class debates involving students and lecturers.
c) The reading of texts (a first individual reading, with the use of a dictionary would be required, followed by a reading with commentary in class sessions, a third individual reading also being recommended).

SYLLABUS
1. Literary Myths: General Considerations. The Exploration of Thematics and Comparative Literature. Characteristic Features in the case of Spanish Literature.
2. Mythic Figures in Spanish Literature of the Golden Age: Don Quixote; Don Juan; the Procuress, Celestina.
3. Spain: A Nation of Rogues? The Picaresque Novel, from Lazarrillo to the Life of Torres Villarroel.
4. The Evolution of the Myth of Don Juan in Modern Times: from Zorrilla to Unamuno.
5. Andalucía ‘s Mythology: Gypsies and Bandits.
6. Andalucía the Exotic: the Myth of Carmen.

SET READINGS
As the Course progresses at least six titles will be read (a selection of dramatic and poetic texts, as well as short stories), the titles of which will be indicated during the first week of classes.

ASSESSMENT
• Two exams will be set, one mid-way through the semester (a pass grade or more meaning that this first half of syllabus content will not be included in the second exam for the students concerned), and the other at its close.
• The exams will be carried out in written form, the questions requiring limited-space answers or answers to objective reading-test type questions.
• An optional essay-type question may also be answered.
• Regular attendance at class sessions and active participation in them will also contribute toward final grades.
