Advanced

This course is designed for students who have completed or tested out of a minimum of four semesters (or six quarters) of college-level Spanish. However, students must take a placement exam to determine the course level into which they will be able to enroll.

COURSE CONTENTS
Throughout this course, the most important literary movements of Spanish literature will be examined and the most significant authors will be analyzed. Through the reading, analysis and interpretation of fragments of their most significant works, students should come to a more complex understanding of Spanish letters.

1.4. Baroque.
1.4.1. The poetry of Góngora and Quevedo.
1.4.2. Baroque Theatre: Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca.
1.5. Romaniticism
1.5.1. The Romantic drama: Don Álvaro and Don Juan.
1.5.2. The poetry of Bécquer.
1.6. Realism: the Realist and Naturalist narrative: Galdós amd Clarín.

SECTION 2-- Spanish Literature in the XX century.
2.1. The Generation of '98.
2.1.1. Poetry: Antonio Machado.
2.1.2. Narrative: Azorín.
2.1.3. Theatre: Valle-Inclán.
2.2. Vanguard: Ramón Gómez de la Serna.
2.3. Juan Ramón Jiménez.
2.4. The Generation of '27: Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén, Rafael Alberti, and Federico García Lorca.
2.5. The Post-War era

EVALUATION

Attendance is mandatory.
