Internship

University of Sydney

Course Description

This unit is based around a project report arising from issues encountered during a 15-day internship project and through a professional development program designed to provide students with the resources to enhance their intern experience.

Students are required to attend 4 workshops which cover: Australian business culture, management styles, cross cultural business communication, teamwork and reflective learning. An interactive approach will be used in the workshops to enable students to draw on their own experiences.

Internship Details: Internship opportunities will be offered in the following fields: Marketing, Business Administration, Finance, Communication, IT, Public Relations, Media, Event Management, Logistics, Government, Environmental Studies and Human Resources. If students express an interest in an area that is currently not offered, the university will seek to set up a new arrangement with a suitable industry partner in that desired area. However, an internship placement cannot be guaranteed.

The internship program includes:
  • At least 15 days working on a project with a host organization
  • 4 professional development workshops
  • 4 reflective journals
  • 1 final project report
Study Abroad interns will also:
  • Develop familiarity with the Australian workplace culture
  • Test their learning in real workplace situations
  • Enhance their interpersonal and communication skills
  • Gain a competitive advantage in the graduate employment market by develping global connections in their chosen profession.
In addition to the internship, students completing a semester abroad will also enroll in 3 courses. Students completing an internship during our 6-week Summer 3 program will also enroll in 1 additional course. Internship students will receive 6 University of Sydney credits for completing the internship and 6 credit points for each additional course taken. This is equivalent to a full time load in the U.S (4 courses for a semester term, and 2 courses for a 6-week summer term).

Please note: The International Office will make every effort to offer internships to all eligible students. However, placements cannot be guaranteed prior to interview. In the event your application to the study abroad internship program is unsuccessful, prospective students are advised to also enroll for an additional class to maintain full-time status. Placement will be finalized by the third week of classes.
