The course seeks to accomplish the following: • Provide an overview of the theories, principles and tools used in the field of peace and conflict resolution; • Acquire an understanding of the nature, dynamics, and intractability aspects of contemporary world conflicts; • Develop skills necessary to confront the challenges of conflict and peace building situations across cultures; • Apply, through role play and simulation, various negotiating techniques and strategies to deal with, manage, and attempt to resolve some of the most intractable conflicts of our time.
- Provide an overview of the theories, principles, and tools in the field of peace and conflict resolution;
- Acquire an understanding of the nature, dynamics, and intractable aspects of contemporary world conflicts;
- Build capacity and develop skills to confront the challenges of conflict and peace-building situations across cultures;
- Apply, through role play and simulation, various negotiating techniques and strategies to deal with, manage, and attempt to resolve some of the most intractable conflicts of our time
Simulation Case Study:
After a student chooses a role (disputant, negotiator, mediator, etc.) in the conflict under study, he/she will proceed to identify the relevant actors and stakeholders involved, trace the origins, development, dynamics and transformation of the conflict. From the many approaches available to the practitioner of conflict resolution, and taking into account the theories, principles and strategies discussed in class, the students will choose the most effective method of bringing the conflict to a mutually acceptable resolution. At the end of the term, the students will proceed to simulate a conflict resolution session and collectively draft a report with the appropriate resolution and recommendations
