  • Overview

Students should be able to demonstrate skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening in the
English language; they should understand and apply the process of critical analysis and be able
to contextualise, identify, compare, analyse and formulate arguments on a variety of historical
and contemporary English language and literature texts.

The foundational course is based on a selection of texts written in English from different
historical periods and regions in the world. The course components include introductions to the
techniques of poetry, drama and prose. The general philosophy of the course is to promote an
understanding of narrative techniques, genres and historical contexts, the development of critical
analytical skills, and the imparting of appropriate 'life-skills' within the context of literature
    written in English.
