    Nelson Mandela University (NMU) is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse universities in Southern Africa. You will be able to take advantage of the university's unique location in the Summerstrand section of Port Elizabeth: four miles from the city center and in a nature reserve, surrounded by the sea and coastal dunes anytime you are not in class. NMU offers a diverse course list in subjects such as sports science, marine biology, zoology, environmental studies, and sustainable development studies. Study Abroad Program Description

Nelson Mandela University’s summer program offers you a opportunity to study South African’s diverse land and sea environments and the unique relationship and history of modern and traditional medicine in South Africa. As a visiting summer student you can choose to enroll in one course during this program.



Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.50.


There is no language prerequisite for this program.

You must have second semester sophomore standing at the time of participation in the program.

Living in ISA housing will give you the opportunity to experience aspects of the South African lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor. Uncovering the uniqueness of your surroundings will help you to feel right at home. No matter which type of housing you choose, you will commute to class as most locals do, via the university bus or walking. With an open and adaptable mind, the experience of living in another culture can be highly rewarding.

Student Residence

The residence halls in Port Elizabeth are located off campus. The apartment-style accommodations have shared kitchens and bathroom facilities. Meals and laundry service are not included. You will pay a $500 refundable security deposit if living in this ISA housing option. ISA may retain some, or all, of this deposit in the event of damage to property, or if utility usage exceeds the allotted monthly amount.



Addo Elephant National Park

The Addo Elephant National Park has over 550 elephants and is the third largest conservation park in South Africa. You will have the opportunity to discuss local policy that protect these lands from development, privatization, and poaching. Become further aware of differences in how some of these species feed, breed, select their partners for mating and survive various threats and predators.

Cape Town

Discover the magic of the Mother City. During this week long adventure you'll see famous spots including but not limited to Table Mountain, Boulders Beach, and Robben Island. Get ready for a week full of history, natural wonders, and cultural exploration. This excursion is organized by NMU Summer School.
