This module addresses basic concepts of chemistry at an introductory level, including the periodic properties of the elements, bonding and the geometries of simple molecules, as well as the fundamentals of redox reactions, chemical equilibrium, thermochemistry and reaction kinetics.
Upon completion of this module students should be able to:
- write the nomenclature of inorganic compounds;
- do calculations on moles, molarity, percent composition, stoichiometry from balanced chemical equations;
- discuss the trends in atomic radii, ionisation energy and electron affinity;
- draw Lewis structures and predict molecular shape, hybridization and polarity;
- balance redox equations in acidic and basic media, and discuss the structure of orbitals and atoms;
- discuss the different types of bonding (covalent, ionic and metallic);
- demonstrate an understanding of the principles of simple chemical equilibria;
- do calculations involving ionic equilibria, including acid-base and precipitation reactions;
- demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of thermochemistry as well the ability to perform simple calculations;
- demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of simple reaction kinetics as well the ability to perform simple calculations;
- perform simple laboratory experiments on the above topics.
