Students will take three courses simultaneously at this level: Integrated Chinese, Chinese Listening, and Spoken Chinese. Each course component will be evaluated separately and participants will receive a separate grade for each component on their transcript.
This class is designed for students who have learned Chinese phonetics and some basic vocabulary. We will begin from Lesson 6 and finish the first volume of the book. Lessons 6 to 15 will cover the same material as in Course 1-1. Lessons 15-20 will additionally include: daily interactions, reading letters, emergencies, and restaurant menus. At the end of the semester, the goal is for students to have command of 790 vocabulary words and 56 basic Chinese grammar patterns.
Students in this class will have some basic daily conversations in Chinese. This class covers the same material as in Course 1-1 but begins with lesson 6 and goes to lesson 23. Lessons 5-20 cover topics like health, at the post office, and food.
Students will practice listening and understanding native Chinese speakers talking at a relatively normal speed. Lessons 6 to 23 in the first book of Developing Chinese - Elementary Listening Course will be covered.
Eligibility for courses may be subject to a placement exam and/or pre-requisites.
Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
