  • Overview

    Course Objectives
Key Western Texts introduces students to fundamental writings (primary sources of great influence) in the Western tradition from a broad spectrum of fields. The aim is to achieve a critical understanding of these texts that thus enables students to participate in this tradition themselves. Texts derive from philosophy, history, literature, economics, religion, sociology etc.

    Course Description
Class discussions are conducted in Socratic fashion and demand a high level of active student participation. Texts will be distributed by email or photocopy and prepared by students as homework. These will be the basis of our discussions. An analysis will focus, above all, on ‘close readings’ of the texts. Every few weeks students will then be required to write a critical essay regarding the text in question.

    Required Textbooks
None. The instructor will provide all class materials.
