This is primarily a composition writing course that introduces the argument in its various forms, including verbal presentations. It is designed for students to be able to write multi-paragraph essays using a variety of sentence structures and vocabulary. The overarching goal is to strengthen a student’s ability to present their point of view persuasively, intelligently, and ethically.
Students are guided through the mechanics of writing and simple paragraphs to the point of developing and presenting solid arguments. By reviewing and deconstructing arguments, students will study what makes a good argument. Students will be prepared to write and speak more effectively by learning logical strategies for presenting and defending ideas. Course topics will include paragraph structure, unity, and coherence, types of essays, how to self and peer edit, as well as an examination of writing and presentation styles. Videos of oral
presentations will also be reviewed.
