  • Overview

    This course is intended for any student who wishes to learn about international organizations (IOs), while honing their negotiation skills and deepening their understanding of global issues. The United Nations (UN), which is the most prominent of IOs, will be the main focus of the course. An array of issues is on the agendas of IOs. This course, however, will focus on peace, collective security, arms control, peacekeeping, peaceful settlement, human rights, environment, and economic development. A main pedagogical tool of the course will be simulation. Through a series of simulated UN meetings and conferences, students will learn and appreciate the functions and workings of IOs

    The course objective is three-fold:
    1) to gain knowledge of the goals, structure, and operations of international organizations;
    2) to strengthen negotiating skills through role-playing simulations;
    3) to enhance critical thinking skills while analyzing current international issues.
