  • Overview

    This course aims to expose learners to conventions in social science essays. It specifically looks at the language of definitions, reporting data, summarising results as well as the skill of evaluating research in the field of applied linguistics.

    Course Objectives

    • Writing definitions and introductions.
    • Understanding how to appropriately ?soften? language to make requests to those of higher status.
    • Noting and using appropriate language to describe trends in tables/graphs.
    • Responding to and analysing texts using paraphrase
    • Writing a summary of a social science/linguistics article.
    • Understanding the structure and language of book reviews.
    • Critiquing: writing analytically rather than descriptively in discussions/evaluations/commentaries.
