The new millenium’s blending of backgrounds and ethnicities from the perspectives of language and literature; selected readings from writers representing a variety of English speaking cultures across the world; discussion and compositions about specific themes such as identity, prejudice, the individual and society, and gender roles as they are embodied across these cultures.
The course aims to give students an awareness and appreciation of literature across Englishspeaking cultures, develop their skills in reading such literature and equip them to critically discuss issues as they occur across various themes and contexts, both orally and in writing. Students will also be prepared to assimilate the knowledge gained from this course with upper-level courses within the division.
Classes take an informal, participative format as the instructor facilitates informed reading and discussion, prior to the presentation of culminating written assignments. Within this framework, groups and individuals will take on project work in conjunction with oral and written presentation.
The primary texts are print-based literature with standard classroom and multimedia support.
