This course is a foundation to the media and communication industries covered in the Professional Communication program with a focus on interdisciplinarity and collaboration. Through a series of case studies and workshops you will learn about compatibilities and tensions between different disciplines within professional communication such as media, journalism, advertising and public relations. Through individual and group work you will explore and develop skills in professional communication processes and practices as well as a critical understanding of the way they operate within social and industrial contexts.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
- Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to your discipline.
- Plan, produce and evaluate innovative content, optimising uses of technology that meets the needs of diverse stakeholders in an international environment.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe a range of theories relevant to professional communication.
- Use a range of Information Communication Technologies and platforms.
- Identify and describe different disciplinary principles and practices and discuss their relevance to professional communication practice.
- Reflect upon the contemporary industrial and social issues shared by different disciplines in professional communication practice.
- Identify and apply strategies for working in small teams.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may include essays, reports, reflective papers, creative projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.
