This course covers the various types of transmission media used in network communications which includes the following topics: analog communication (AM/FM), transmission line theory, communication medium, types of copper media, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) and its configurations, troubleshooting, security, photonics, optical and electrical transmission systems, basic optical communications link, basic wave, ray and particle light theory, concepts of optical transmission, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) and photonic measurements, Compare Characteristics of various Transmission Media, safety procedures.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:
1. Identify types of networks using different transmission media and compare features and operational aspects of transmission media.
2. Develop the concepts of basic theory and operation of analog communication systems, transmission line and fibre optic theory.
3. Implement basic transmission line theory to determine velocity of propagation and measure AC steady state phenomena such as standing wave pattern, impedance transformation, reflection coefficient, VSWR and propagation constant.
4. Match a transmission line to any given load and analyse power flow on transmission lines under AC steady state excitation.
5. Describe functions and operations of wireless local area networks and configure wireless local area networks
6. Describe characteristic of optical fibre and optical concepts encountered in photonics components.
7. Make and test an optical fibre/copper cable and perform basic measurement techniques.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will participate in a variety of teaching methods including: lectures, tutorials, practicals, presentation. This training prepares you for the CWNA certification test.
In this unit you will learn various types of transmission media used in network communications.
Classroom tutorial activities:
Lectures: to introduce the important concepts.
• Attending lectures will make it much easier for you to understand the central concepts of the course
• You will feel more comfortable and you will learn more if you read the relevant material before you attend the lectures
Tutorials: to enable you to ask questions and to clarify unresolved issues • Review the material and prepare your questions before you come to class
• There will be an overview of course content with a focus on the material students find difficult
• If something is unclear or if you find yourself falling behind please ask for help immediately
• You may be given worksheets to complete during the tutorial
Reflective Lab Journal: You will perform the exercise and write it up in a reflective lab journal.
The reflective journal will be an Online Blog created in the Learning Hub.
Common questions arising from ’reflection’ are:
• What happened? (Reflecting on actions)
• Why did it happen? (Reflecting in actions)
• What can be learnt from this for future actions? (Reflecting for actions) The write up will be a record of your actions as they are performed and your corresponding observations.
Work simulated activities: you will progressively implement a networking scenario as you would be expected to do in industry.
• You will be expected to work on a networking scenario progressively as you learn the material required for you to be able to do so.
Practical exercises: to give you the hands on experience of implementing and troubleshooting networks
Occupational Health and Safety:
Conduct in lecture theatres, classrooms and laboratories will be of a standard required by OH&S legislation as applied to industry.
• You must behave in such a way as not to place the health and safety of yourself or anyone else at risk
• Covered shoes must be worn in all labs
o Thongs and sandals must not be worn in any lab

Learning resources will consist of recommended references and class notes which may be accessed through "myRMIT" if you are in Melbourne and via "RMIT online" if you are based in Vietnam.
The set of references is deliberately broad, including books, journal publications, government reports, industry standards and handbooks, and web-based resources.
