    Course Description

    This course focuses on contemporary issues and emerging trends in management that are relevant to workers and managers in a complex, dynamic and uncertain business environment.  The course adopts a holistic approach to understanding contemporary issues by drawing upon the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in other courses in the Management program. The course provides you with an opportunity to integrate the knowledge acquired in other courses on the program and to review and evaluate current issues facing organisations and managers.

    Topics covered include: Technology and digitalisation, diversity and inclusion, globalisation and multiculturalism, emotion management, and change management. This course emphasises developing research, diagnostic, analytical and communication skills to examine and discuss selected management topics.


    Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

    On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

    • Apply relevant theories to critically examine contemporary management issues and formulate practical and ethical management solutions.
    • Identify and evaluate the applicability of current management practices to contemporary management issues and challenges.
    • Analyse the impact of contemporary management issues on workers, managers, organisations and community. 
    • Effectively communicate concepts and arguments in a logical, coherent and engaging manner.
    • Demonstrate teamwork skills in evaluating and analysing issues, challenges and alternative solutions. 

    The module focuses on contemporary issues and emerging trends in management, and will provide students with an opportunity to integrate the knowledge acquired in other modules on the programme and to review and evaluate current issues facing organisations and managers. Students will be provided with an opportunity to demonstrate the necessary leadership and teamwork skills related to management practice.


    Overview of Learning Activities

    Lectures incorporate learning activities and technologies, including:

    • Discussion
    • Polls 
    • Videos: expert opinion and case study demonstration

    Learning activities provide an opportunity for you to discuss and apply relevant theories and thinking learned in the lectures. Communication skills will be developed through individual contribution and participation in the classroom. Real-life cases are used to demonstrate how concepts and issues are applied across a range of workplace and industry settings. This format provides students with an opportunity to analyse relevant issues and challenges in order to generate potential practical and ethical alternative solutions. Active learning within an individual or group learning setting, will take the form of:

    • Case study analysis
    • Exercises
    • Scenario analysis
    • Debate
    • Presentation


    Overview of Learning Resources

    Various learning resources are available online through myRMIT/Blackboard. In addition to lecture notes, assessment details and a study schedule, you may also be provided with links to relevant online information, readings, audio and video clips, and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.
