Nelson Mandela is one of the great iconic figures of the post-war world. From the 1940s, when he first entered politics, to his election as South Africa's first post-apartheid president in 1994, Mandela has exerted a huge impact on the public imagination. Yet, this most charismatic of politicians remains an enigma. Mandela has always cultivated an emotional and distance from his adoring public. His political attachments have changed markedly over time. His statesmanlike demeanour belies a tendency to impetuousness. This module sets Mandela in the broad context of modern South African history. It covers the full period of his political activism and poses challenging questions in doing so. We shall consider Mandela both as a South African and as a global citizen. In doing so shall consider whether it is possible to understand the history of a country through the persona of a single individual.
