Individual instrumental/vocal lessons. Instruction in technical development, musicianship, performance etiquette, repertoire selection, musical interpretation and stylistic considerations. Students attend a weekly Music Forum Performance Lab and perform on a regular basis. Previous instrumental training required. (See ABRSM Grade 5 as a reference for minimum entry level repertoire and achievement) Does not satisfy the humanities requirement.
This course provides the individual instruction required for the development of practical skills in instrumental/vocal performance. The study of performance cultivates skills of mind-body coordination, physical skills involved in playing an instrument, and artistic and critical skills of awareness, perception, reasoning and judgement involved in preparing and presenting a performance.
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
1. demonstrate progress in the development of technical skills, musicality, stylistic awareness, and the building of performance repertoire. Minimum technical and musical level aligned with ABRSM Grade 6. (Repertoire may be selected from other sources; however the level of difficulty and expected minimum standard of proficiency is aligned to Grade 6).
2. demonstrate the ability to understand and implement suggestions and criticism and to demonstrate fundamental critical skills towards effective musical self-reflection and improvement.
3. prepare, present and communicate suitable assigned repertoire with guidance at Music Forum and/or Music Area concerts.
4. maintain a 14-week Practice Journal to: set goals with guidance, keep record of repertoire and level of achievement, review tutor criticism and suggestions, and verbally reflect on own progress.
5. demonstrate an understanding of performance etiquette skills: clear and polite communication; appropriate behaviour, dress attire and stage presence at all performances; timely preparation of material and arrival to rehearsals and concerts.
METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
In accordance with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Private instruction catered to individual student needs
- Practice Journal
- Frequent performance experience at weekly Music Forum Performance Lab
- Music Forum concerts, workshops, master classes, and other relevant Music Area events.
- Office hours: students are encouraged to make use of the office hours of the Music Forum instructor, where they may ask questions, discuss the Practice Journal, receive feedback on their progress
