    Overview of psychology as a natural science. Foundations and contemporary perspectives in psychology, research methods and ethical principles, biological foundations of behaviour, perceptual and sensory systems, states of consciousness, learning and memory, thought and language processes, motivation and emotion.

    Fundamental introductory course suitable for psychology majors as well as students with an interest in psychology as a natural science. Introduces students to the basic biological underpinnings of human behaviour, where brain anatomy underlies the processing and interpretation of sensory information, thought and language processes, as well as phenomena related to consciousness, learning, memory, motivation and emotion. Along with Psychology as a Social Science, this course helps students appreciate a comprehensive exploration and awareness of psychological processes.

    As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
    1. Compare and contrast different theoretical perspectives in psychology as well as identify basic and applied areas in modern psychology.
    2. Describe the different scientific methods used in psychology as well as the ethical principles applied in research.
    3. Describe how the interplay of nature and nurture explains human diversity with an emphasis on genetic influences on behavior.
    4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts related to the biological foundations of behaviour, sensation, perception and states of consciousness.
    5. Acquire an understanding of major theories and their applications in learning, and memory, cognition, language, motivation and emotion.
