Psychologists as Researchers

DESCRIPTION
The course aims to introduce students to psychological research by reviewing samples of key studies in the discipline, becoming familiar to research conducted within the Psychology Department and gaining experiential knowledge acting as human participants. Students will be encourage to evaluate psychological claims in everyday life against research evidence, and address the practical and ethical aspects of the research activity.

RATIONALE 
This module aims to present students to the systematic study of psychological topics, to expose them to the equipments, apparatuses and instruments used in Psychological research, and to familiarize them with areas of research currently conducted within the Department. Student participation in different research studies provides an insider's perspective and hands on experience for the evaluation of procedures and application of ethical principles through self- reflection activities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
As a result of taking this course, students should be able to:
1. Summarize key aspects of research studies and compare them with personal and popular believes on current psychological topics.
2. Use computing and information processing skills to conduct literature research, gather, summarize and assess evidence.
3. Participate in three psychological studies, at least one with experimental and another with non-experimental methodology.
4. Engage in self-reflective practices reporting on their experience from research participation and/or field trips.
