Testing and Assessment

DESCRIPTION: 
Comprehensive knowledge of the theory and practice of psychological testing and assessment. Statistical analysis and in-depth understanding of the psychometric properties of tests. Evaluation of achievement, intelligence, cognitive, neuropsychological and personality tests. Application of testing and assessment in various applied settings. Laboratory practice sessions complements the lectures.

RATIONALE: 
This course surveys the theory and practice of psychological testing and measurement, the application of psychological tests and assessment in educational, clinical, and industrial/organizational settings, and offers both didactic and hands-on training in psychometric theory and techniques. Topics covered include history of psychological testing, controversies and ethical issues in testing and assessment; psychometric and test development principles and techniques (standardization and norming, reliability, validity, and utility; item analysis); review of intelligence, achievement, personality, cognitive, neuropsychological testing and applications in diverse settings and populations. The course aims to provide students with knowledge and practical skills relevant to all areas of specialization in the field of psychology and complements modules teaching research methodology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
As a result of taking this course, the student should be able to:
1. Present a historical perspective of psychological measurement and assessment.
2. Discuss cultural and ethical considerations in testing and assessment of individuals and/or groups.
3. Discuss major assessment applications in various settings (e.g. clinical, counselling, school, forensic, health, and industrial settings).
4. . Demonstrate a solid understanding of basic concepts in psychometrics (i.e., standardization and norming procedures, reliability, validity, utility, test development and item analysis)
5. Discuss the utility as well as the relative strengths and weaknesses of intelligence tests, aptitude/achievement, objective and projective personality tests. 
METHOD OF

TEACHING AND LEARNING: 
In congruence with the learning and teaching strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
- Class lectures will consist of demonstrations of the material presented, videos, discussions, group and individual work, role play examples
- Interactive learning (class discussions, group and individual work) and practical hands-on problems solved in class and Blackboard.
