  • Overview

    DESCRIPTION: 
    Trends in national and international theatre and performance encountered through attendance of performances taking place in Athens. Students discuss and analyze performances in the class.

    RATIONALE: 
    This course provides an understanding of the way theatre and performance is being produced today. It exposes students to the current trends in the city of Athens and familiarizes them with a wide spectrum of genres and styles. Throughout the course students will be encouraged to investigate artistic approaches and think of performance as a mode of research.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES: 
    As a result of taking this course students should be able to:
    1. Summarize a variety of genres and styles in performance.
    2. Define and evaluate key artists’ contribution in a performance production.
    3. Examine the interpretive possibilities of a performance.
    4. Identify theatrical spaces of Athens and their characteristics.
    5. Develop critical tools to analyze a performance.

    METHOD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING:
    In congruence with the teaching and learning strategy of the college, the following tools are used:
    • Lectures, presentations, discussions and attendance of theatrical performances in Athens.
    • Office hours: students are encouraged to make full use of instructor’s office hours for questions, to see their exams/papers, and/or go over lecture material.
    • Use of a Blackboard site, where instructors post assignment instructions, timely announcements, as well as additional resources.
