OverviewThe course is lecture based with prescribed additional reading and recommendations for self-directed study. Topics covered include: origin and function of organelles. Animal and plant mitochondrial genomes: structure, gene content, mode of evolution. The significance of mitochondrial DNA in human disease. The impact of lateral and horizontal gene transfer events on plant mitochondrial genome evolution. The plant plastid genome: structure, gene content, mode of evolution. The impact of gene transfer events on plastid genome evolution.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are converted to semester credits/quarter units differently among U.S. universities. Students should confirm the conversion scale used at their home university when determining credit transfer.
