The aim of this module is to develop participants understanding of the role of sport as an important aspect of social structure and cultural behaviour. The module begins by charting the historical background to the development of sport in society with a particular emphasis on Irish and international sports development in the modern era. The links between sport and social structures such as politics, social class, the commercial and business sectors, education and the media will be analysed. There will be a particular focus on how issues such as identity (local and national) social class, race and gender are dealt with and impact on the sports context.
1. Identify and assess some of the key social, cultural, political and economic factors that have influenced the development of modern sport.
2. Understand the historical and current structures and content of sport in Ireland.
3. Identify a number of the important theoretical perspectives in the sociology of sport.
4. Discuss how social theorists analyse sport in society.
5. Recognise the various ways in which politics, economics, social class, gender, race, drugs, media and commercialism impact on sport in society.
6. Present a review of the contents of relevant sociology of sport literature to colleagues and academic staff.
7. Prepare a written assignment on an issue of interest in the area of sport in society using appropriate, research, citing and referencing.
