  • Overview

    The purpose of this module, conducted in Spanish, is to allow students to critically engage with social, political and cultural issues in contemporary Spain. Discussion and critical analysis are based on a range of authentic multimodal resources to enhance the aural and oral skills and to deepen the student's understanding of today's Spain. Literature, music, media and films are some of the materials used. The module focuses on recent changes related to gender in Spain.

    Learning Outcomes
    1. Understand a range of spoken registers drawn from a variety of sources (including broadcast media, documentaries, films, radio and academic discussions) and extract information, ideas and opinions.
    2. Demonstrate the ability to use topic-specific vocabulary using a broad lexical repertoire to express ideas with accuracy: the learner will have knowledge of and ability to use the vocabulary of the target language and develop awareness and control of the organisation of meaning.
    3. Present ideas clearly and accurately through Spanish using complex structures, appropriate vocabulary, register and tone.
    4. Express critical thinking on topics related to contemporary socio-cultural issues.
    5. Express themselves spontaneously, fluently and precisely in a variety of social contexts and on a broad number of different topics approached in the classroom.
    6. Develop resourcefulness: find new, creative and different ways of transmitting a message when a debate and a discussion take place.
