OverviewThe ways in which archaeologists think about the past matters every bit as much as what they find. This module provides an introduction to the ways in which archaeologists make sense of the past: the kinds of questions we ask, how we answer them, and why we ask these sorts of questions. The module introduces the key thinkers in archaeology from the nineteenth century to the present, examining how they developed and transformed the approaches of their predecessors. The module is a history of archaeological thought, placing developments in the theory and practice of archaeology into their social and economic context. Students will be encouraged to participate actively in understanding how archaeological thought has changed over time.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits are converted to semester credits/quarter units differently among U.S. universities. Students should confirm the conversion scale used at their home university when determining credit transfer.
