Overview
This course is an introduction to key elements of late nineteenth-century and twentieth-century dramatic writing, dramaturgy and stage history with special attention to the ways in which meanings are produced by theatre, to acting and directorial practice, and to the different ways in which the theatre functions as a social institution. Naturalistic, modernist and postmodernist forms of theatre are considered in relation to a number of case studies.
