OverviewThe course surveys the major writers of England from the Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Enlightenment. The course emphasizes historical and cultural influences on writers such as the Beowulf poet, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Donne, Spenser, Milton, Pope, Swift, and Samuel Johnson.
