Overview
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course intends to help students to integrate the basic concepts of strategy formulation,
organizational architecture and personal leadership, with a strong emphasis on the need for
companies and managers to have these three dimensions aligned in order to successfully reach
their goals.
Main topics of the course include:
• The job of the general manager
• The concept of business strategy
• Transforming strategic concepts into action
• Structural and organizational constraints
• Managing the organizational culture
• Motivation and change management
• Managers and leaders
• Personal leadership
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be encouraged to explore business situations related to implementation issues of
strategic concepts, where organizational leaders have faced operational problems and dilemmas
resulting from strategic decisions.
TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODOLOGY
The course will include lecture classes, case discussions and a guest presentation.
Active oral class participation will be required.
The course is taught in English.

be provided on the presentation of the first class of the course.
COURSE CONTENT
1 the section on The Role of the General Manager includes a lecture and the discussion of the
Yellowtail Marine case.
2 the section on Strategic Concepts and Frameworks includes lectures and the discussion of
Delta Q, Queijo Saloio, André Rieu and Ach Brito cases.
3 the section on Organizational Structure and Organizational Culture includes a lecture and the
discussion of the H3 and Casas do Benfica cases.
4 the section on Change Management includes a lecture, an exercise on the Our Iceberg is Melting
book and the discussion of the Changing the Old Order case.
5 the section on Leadership includes lectures, the screening and discussion of the movie Invictus,
and the discussion of the Donald Rumsfeld and the Abu Ghraib Prison and Expatica
Communications cases.
