OverviewTo give students an understanding of key issues in Plato's Philosophy. To enable students to see the relevance of these issues in contemporary debates. To introduce students to the distinctive problems of reading ancient philosophical texts.On completion of the course students should be able to:
These skills will be demonstrated by a written essay and examination.
- Discuss the relationship between Socrates and Plato and assess its importance for the understanding of Plato's work.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the different interpretations of Plato's 'theory' of forms and discuss these in a critical and philosophically informed way.
- Discuss critically the various accounts of knowledge in Plato's dialogues.
- Discuss critically central issues in Plato's moral theory.
- Analyse the relationship between Plato's moral theory and his metaphysics and epistemology.

Credits earned vary according to the policies of the students' home institutions. According to ISA policy and possible visa requirements, students must maintain full-time enrollment status, as determined by their home institutions, for the duration of the program.
