  • Overview

    The course covers the structures and functions of DNA, RNA and proteins, and the relations between these molecules. It also describes how cells can harvest energy from their environment, the major central metabolic pathways and their roles.
    The overall aims are:
    1) information storage and flow from the base sequence in DNA through mRNA to the primary structure, folding and targeting of proteins,
    2) the relationships between the structures and functions of proteins involved in catalysis, signalling and transport,
    3) energy harvesting, the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids and its regulation, and
    4) the structures and replication of nucleic acids;
    ? to prepare students for further studies in the fields of biochemistry, genetics and molecular cell biology;
    ? to provide practical experience of analysis of enzyme activity and of DNA.
