Study Abroad Program Description
Open to students at a high advanced language level and above, you will refine your Spanish language abilities while learning about the history and culture of the Spanish-speaking world in this immersive program. You will enroll one Spanish language course of your choosing plus three or four content courses, instructed entirely in Spanish. Classmates are international students, the majority of whom are from the U.S. All courses are taught by Universidad de Granada faculty at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas.
All students are required to take a Spanish language placement exam upon arrival in Granada. This exam will determine your language level and course selections are not confirmed until the results are available. If the placement exam indicates that you are not at the advanced level, you will be required to switch to the Spanish Language, Culture & Electives program.
In addition to the semester-long courses, there is also the option to add an intensive month-long Spanish language class at the beginning of the term. The Fall A and Academic Year A programs will start with an 80 contact hour intensive Spanish language course while the Spring A program will begin with a similar 60 contact hour course. The Fall B and Spring B programs do not contain an intensive month.
A Spanish student visa is required for programs over 90 days and obtaining one may require out of state travel. Please contact your appropriate Site Specialist for more information pertaining to the process of acquiring a Spanish student visa.
Visa Information

Academic Information
Course Selection
- Students begin with a 80-hour intensive Spanish language course prior to the semester.
- Students will enroll in one required Spanish language course at their respective language level, and three or four additional electives taught in Spanish.
- Requests for sample syllabi can be made to the Granada Program Manager.
Language Placement
- Enrollment in all courses is determined by the results of a language placement exam administered by the CLM. Please note that your performance on the placement exam may not reflect the number of semesters of language instruction you’ve already completed at your home university. We strongly suggest that students who are trying to place into any level of language beyond true beginning prepare for the language placement exam by reviewing previous coursework.
- If a student places below the high advanced level, they will not be eligible for this program and will be required to enroll in the Spanish Language, Culture & Electives program.
Course Availability
- All students should seek pre-approval for alternate courses in the event of last-minute class cancelations.
- The courses below reflect the most current list of courses released by the host university. Please refer to this list when completing your pre-registration form. Also note that courses are always subject to change.
- Additional foreign language courses may be available, please contact the Granada Site Specialist for more information.
Transcripts
- The transcript from the Universidad de Granada will reflect Contact Hours. Please be in touch with your home university regarding credit transfer for this program.

Funding Your ISA Program
As an ISA participant, you have the opportunity to apply for scholarships and grants that can be applied directly to assist with your study abroad programs. ISA offers over $1,000,000 in scholarships and grants each year. To see what opportunities are available, you may visit the Scholarships and Grants page. Please note that some programs, including remote learning opportunities, are not eligible for scholarships.
View all Funding OptionsHousing
Living in ISA housing will allow you the opportunity to experience aspects of the Spanish lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor. Regardless of your housing option, you will have a short commute to your university. Travel times to the various university buildings generally range between 15 and 35 minutes depending on housing and class locations. With an open and adaptable mind, the experience of living in another culture can be highly rewarding.
We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations, however, housing preference requests cannot be guaranteed.

Homestay
Homestays are best if you are seeking full linguistic and cultural immersion during your time abroad. Each host family has been carefully selected by ISA's resident staff in order to best accommodate your needs and to ensure a comfortable living situation. Homestays will provide two meals a day (except on ISA excursion days) and laundry service, including a change of sheets and towel, once a week. You will typically share a room with another ISA student of the same gender. Single rooms may be available for an additional fee.

Apartment
Apartments are a great housing option if you are seeking complete independence during your time abroad. Apartments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and availability is limited. Rent and utilities are included in the program price, and each apartment is fully furnished and centrally located. Meals and laundry service are not included.

Student Residence
Certain programs allow you to live in a residencia for an extra cost. If you choose to live in the residencia, you will be placed in a double room, and you may be placed with other international roommates that are not part of the ISA program. Breakfast is served Monday through Friday in the residencias, and you will have access to the kitchen during both the week and weekend. Unlike a typical dorm in the US, the residencia is not located on campus. Please contact ISA for more information on the residencia option and to request a residencia contract.

Independent Housing
You may opt to secure housing independently. If you select this option, you will receive a discount equal to the housing portion of the program price. By choosing to opt out of ISA housing, you are responsible for researching and reserving housing, and paying all fees, deposits, and rent directly to the housing facility that you choose.
Excursions
