    NOTE: While Beginning and High Beginning Levels share the same course descriptions, each class will be taught independently and at different paces.


    Student?s ability to both understand others and express oneself in day to day situations using basic linguistic methods, as well as using acquired skills in order to exchange simple and direct information.


    Listening Comprehension.-
    In a conversation with an interlocutor, the student will learn to understand spoken language referring to material necessities and social relations of daily life, physical sensations, explicitly stated feelings, personal opinions also expressed simply and explicitly.
    Student will develop the ability to comprehend basic information related to various means of communication.

    Oral Proficiency.-
    In a direct conversation with an interlocutor the student must be able to express orally information related to material necessities and social relations of daily life, physical sensations, feelings, personal opinions, in such a way that his/her message is understood, taking into account expected errors and a slower than normal speaking speed depending on given level.

    Reading Comprehension.-
    The student must understand the most essential information from short original texts (personal notes and letters, advertisements, etc.) related to fundamental needs of daily life and/or dealing specifically with cultural contents.
    Student will develop the skills necessary to identify and extract the pertinent information from any given text, regardless of the grammatical or lexical elements the text contains that are unfamiliar to the student.

    Written proficiency.-
    The student will be able to compose personal notes concerning basic life needs and elaborate descriptions and narrations through the usage of simple sentence structures and basic connectors. The text written by the student must be comprehendible to the reader despite having expected orthographic errors.


    C. 1. Communicative components:
    - Control of communication: how to say, pronounce, write or translate material.

    - Present indicative tense of regular verbs and most frequent irregular verbs: tener, querer, haber, hacer, ser, ir, conocer, saber, poner, estar, salir, traducir, parecer, conducir.
    - Dipthongs and vocalic alternation of present the tense in: e/ie, o/ue, e/i, u/ue: preferir, poder, seguir, jugar.
    - Presence or absence of the subject pronoun.
    - Definite and indefinite articles.
    - Interrogative sentences with yes or no answers.
    - Sentences formed using: y, o, pero.
    - Numbers and numbering.
    - Gender and number agreement of adjectives.
    - Forms and uses of demonstratives.
    - Forms and uses of possessives.
    - Forms and uses of interrogatives: qué, quién/quiénes.
    - Preposition de + subject, material and possessor.
    - Clauses containing relative pronouns: que, donde.
    - Uses of ser: identification, definition, classification.
    - Most frequent reflexive verbs: llamarse, parecerse.
    - Terms referring to the inhabitants of a particular place and their gender.

    - Uses of the prepositions a and en in relation to a location.

    - Forms and uses of the gerund: estar + gerundio.

    - Basic contrasts between ser y estar in descriptions.

    - General rules of conduct in Spanish society: means of expression and non-verbal language.
    - Cliches: them and us.
    - Daily life: schedules, meals, leisure activities, work, family.
    - Geography: geographic situation and general characteristics of Spain and Latin America.
    - The Spanish Democracy: The monarchy and the state of the Autonomous Communities.
    - Introduction to the principal cultural manifestations in Spain: Music and Folklore.
