Course Description: This Spanish course is designed for intermediate level students who need to use Spanish in the health profession field. Through a communicative approach, students develop their communicative competence to interact linguistically in an appropriate manner in various situations that may occur in the course of their work both orally and in writing. In the classroom, students work with linguistic competence (grammatical, spelling, and learning terms specific to the health area) appropriate to the communicative situation. This course also emphasizes the development of strategic competence for the student to have communication resources that enable better implementation of their work.
UNIT 1. INTRODUCE ONSELF AND OTHERS
Communicative content: Introduce oneself and others. Provide personal information about themselves and others and request information from others. Formal and informal greetings and farewells.
Intercultural content: Formal and inform ways of addressing another in the Spanish speaking world.
UNIT 2. IN THE HEALTH CENTER
Communicative content: Talk about existence and location. Ask for the location of shops and services in a hospital.
Intercultural content: Approach to health care in Spain and Europe.
UNIT 3. HABITS AND CUSTOMS
Communicative content: Talk about daily routines and frequency. Use the impersonality to discuss customs. Compare habits. Speaking of tastes and preferences.
Intercultural content: Approach to the varieties of Spanish.
UNIT 4. PHYSICAL HEALTH
Communicative content: Describe physical characteristics. Expressing obligation. Expressing pain. Locate organs and body parts.
Intercultural content: Forms of the Spanish health system.
UNIT 5. MOODS
Communicative content: Describe moods, feelings and character traits. Ask someone how they feel and talk about how you feel yourself.
Intercultural content: Contrasting social customs.
UNIT 6.DOCTOR APPOINTMENT
Communicative content: Start and end a telephone conversation. Ask for a doctor on call. Ask for an ambulance. Request an appointment with the doctor (with the general practitioner and the specialist). Ask to be transferred to a specific department.
Intercultural content: Language in other forms of communication (SMS and social networks).
UNIT 7. MEDICAL HISTORY
Communicative content: Express past actions, causes and consequences. Talk about changing symptoms and conditions.
Intercultural content: Formulas to react appropriately to what happened to someone else.
UNIT 8. HEALTH TIPS
Communicative content: Give orders and advice. Ask about the possibility of doing something. Expressing opinion.
Intercultural content: Home remedies.
Participation, homework and attitude: 10%
Midterm Exam: 25%
Final Exam (25% written section and 10% oral section) 35%
Final letter grades will be assigned using the following scale, expressed in terms of the percentage of total possible points earned:
10 = Matrícula de Honor (one for every 20 students)
9 ? 9,9 = Sobresaliente
7 ? 8,9 = Notable
5 ? 6,9 = Aprobado
0 ? 4,9 = Suspenso
Attending the course but not taking the exams = No presentado
Missing class more than permitted = No asistencia
Courses and course hours of instruction are subject to change.
Eligibility for courses may be subject to a placement exam and/or pre-requisites.
Availability of courses is based on enrollment numbers. All students should seek pre-approval for alternate courses in the event of last minute class cancellations
