Hours & Credits
To gain insight in the reading process, the development of reading skills, and factors that affect this development.
People read for enjoyment, but also because they have to participate effectively in a society in which written communication plays an
essential role. In school, students read both literary texts and texts that allow them to learn content knowledge. Not every student is a competent, motivated reader. In this course, we examine how reading skills develop during the course of children’s and adolescents’ lives,
to what extent this development is affected by personal characteristics such as motivation and which role families and schools play. Themes that are discussed are: emergent literacy, reading motivation, reading comprehension and ICT.
