    COURSE DESCRIPTION

    Major emphasis is placed on lexical and grammatical accuracy at Beginner Level (A1) in accordance with the parameters laid out by the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (CEFR). Communicative competence: the main objective of the course is to develop the students’ proficiency in language used in real everyday situations; grammar confidence is reinforced in all four language skills with an emphasis on spoken communication.

    GENERAL OBJECTIVE

    At this level, the main objective is to provide the student with the necessary linguistic knowledge to be able to relate in an elementary way, using and understanding frequently used expressions, as well as simple phrases designed to meet the needs for immediate use.

    At the end of the course, students will be able to use and recognize the linguistics resources needed for:

    • Ask and give basic information
    • Talk about the family and the every day activities
    • Make descriptions and simple presentations
    • Understand and give simple instructions
    • Write simple phrases, sentences and concrete texts of little difficulty
    • Understand short and messages well articulated
    • Express likes, desires, interests and physical sensations.

     

    ASSESSMENT

    • Quizzes 30%
    • Writing tests 30%
    • Participation: Students’ involvement in class is of upmost importance as class development strongly relies on their insights and contributions.
    • Quizzes: There will be several quizzes throughout the course which will focus on specific contents covered in class. Emphasis will be placed on grammar and lexicon in accordance with the students’ level of proficiency. In addition, tests may entail listening or reading comprehension.
    • Final Exam: The final exam will include all the topics studied during the course. It is worth 30% of the course’s grade.
