  • Overview

    1. COURSE JUSTIFICATION:
    Logistics processes and international physical distribution offer a quality tool for quality
    and competitiveness for international trade players. Usually, quality is only linked to
    the product that is marketed without taking into account transportation. The course is
    justified according to the curriculum, international transport it is crucial to guarantee
    the product quality and timely delivery to the buyer, so that it can ensure "the right
    product at the right time, at the best price possible ".
    It is required to rethink the processes of International Physical Distribution - IPD, in
    order to be developed based on the research of the characteristics of each
    transportation model adapted to the needs of customers, optimizing costs and transit
    times, under the strict compliance of safety standards and world quality standards.
    2. GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE:
    Build a solid and structured knowledge about the means of transportation that are used
    for the movement of international cargo, providing students, the abilities for designing,
    implementing, managing, leading and evaluating International physical distribution
    programs and projects, as well as knowing wide, specific and practical tools useful for
    planning, choosing, managing and controlling the logistical y psychical distribution
    process on an efficient and effective way, optimizing time and economic resources.
    Plan export/import processes from the various conditions presented by the different
    means of transportation and assess the results of the operations without leaving aside
    the norms and institutions governing international transport of goods.
    3. ANALITICAL DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:
    0. Ethics in negotiations
    Ø Objective: To develop and implement new negotiation strategies regarding national
    and international transport and customs agency keeping in mind business ethics and
    social responsibility.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Research / Testing / Teacher Notes / Case
    Studies / Internet / Readings etc.
    1. Logistics; General concepts and types of logistics
    Ø Objective: To learn about the importance of the logistics within companies and their
    applicability in topics: transportation, import and export.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Research, visits to distribution centers and
    teacher notes.
    2. Introduction to international transport means
    Ø Objective: To identify and reflect on the importance and impact of IPD on the
    business world and the inherent responsibility acquired when operating it.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: lecture, class discussion, videos.
    Containers (Types, uses, measures, capacity).
    3. International maritime transportation, international and national fluvial
    transportation
    Ø Objective: To identify and analyze the Colombian port systems, analyze their use
    according to transits and characteristics of each one of them. Identify and analyze the
    structures and equipment involved in IMT and different types of logistics involved.
    Deepen on the experiences of the people involved in the work of the same. Identify
    and recognize the work of port operators and their impact on the IPD. Identify and
    analyze the role of natural and legal persons involved in the IMT and the Fluvial
    Transport in Colombia. Identify and understand the different institutions, national and
    international, governing IMT and the Fluvial Transport in Colombia. Identify and
    analyze the different types of bills of lading, its management and presentation. Develop
    and prepare shipping instructions and BL.
    Teaching and learning strategies: Lecture, class discussion, videos, visit to container
    yard, port operators and ports, practical exercises.
    Conventions governing international shipping:
    Ø Objective: To reflect and understand the basics of international shipping and
    agencies that regulate it.
    4. Air transportation
    Ø Objective: To identify and analyze the situation and importance of air
    transportation. Know and understand the steps in an operation of air cargo. Witnessing
    an export and steps. Apply knowledge of cutting and characteristics of international air
    waybill and procedures to be followed after delivering the cargo to the airline. Analyze
    the handling of dangerous goods in air cargo. Analyze the role of the different actors
    involved in the air cargo. Analyze the situation of international air transport.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Lecture, class discussion, case study, visit to
    cargo terminal, talk with a bulking agent of an international airline.
    5. Land transportation (road and rail) in Colombia and abroad and road
    infrastructural
    Ø Objective: To identify and analyze the situation, characteristics and regulations of
    land transportation in Colombia. Analyze the international road freight transport.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: lecture, class discussion, videos practical cases.
    6. Multimodal transportation - Logistics for the movement of export and
    import goods - Security systems for international transportation of goods
    – future issues of international logistics.
    Ø Objective: To analyze multimodal transportation. Apply the knowledge acquired in
    the logistics for the movement of export and import products. Understand which
    systems and standards are being implemented to improve security in the international
    transportation of goods. And analyze aspects that are and will be important for
    international logistics and physical distribution.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Lecture, class discussion, practical cases and
    videos.
    7. Actors of International Cargo Transport
    Port operators
    Ø Objective: To understand the importance of port operators as a logistics link, their
    coordination with other logistics players and the way they should be hired and paid.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Research and student presentations with
    defined parameters. Complement and conclusions of the teacher.
    Logistics Operators and Customs Agents.
    Ø Objective: To understand the importance of logistics operators and customs agents
    as a logistics link, coordination with other logistics players and the way they should be
    hired and paid.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Research and student presentations with
    defined parameters. Complement and conclusions of the teacher.
    8. International Commercial terms – INCOTERMS 2010
    Ø Objective: Know and apply INCOTERMS.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Lecture and practical exercises.
    Construction of the cost matrix from EXW to the end price.
    Ø Objective: the cohesion of the logistics players and sort. Additionally afford
    according to the case.
    Teaching and learning strategies: Real exercises on logistics cost matrix.
    9. Panama; Major Ports, Free Trade Zone, Panama Canal and Its history, the
    locks, the Free Zone of Colon.
    Ø Objective: To present the student the actual movement of loads of one of the main
    ports of the Americas and encourage them to participate in the annual visit to ports
    programmed by the university.
    Ø Teaching and learning strategies: Research, teacher notes, possible trip to
    Panama, exhibitions.
    10.Insurance and Payment in International Trade (its relationship with the
    DFI)
    Objective: To understand the management of insurance (for cargos in national and
    international transportation), its component parts and their coordination, as well as how
    to conduct the negotiation and payment to different providers for their services.
    Teaching and Learning Strategies: Case Studies, Teacher Notes.
    Decision making in international transport
    Ø Objective: To know how to select the optimum mean of transport according to the
    destination and the product exported. Identify the different elements to optimize time
    and minimize transportation costs.
